Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Per pale Gules and Argent a chief Azure and overall a five-bastioned fort Or.  Attached below and to the sides of the shield a Red scroll inscribed IN SUPPORT OF HICKORY in Gold letters.

Symbolism
The blue, red and white division of the shield is adapted from the North Carolina state flag and defines the units home location as well as alluding to the national colors.  The fort symbolizes strength, and the bastions, as points radiating outward from a central stronghold, indicate support to the troops and represent the units mission.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 28 October 1983.

That for the regiments and separate battalions of the North Carolina Army National Guard:  On a wreath Argent and Gules, a hornets nest handing from a bough beset with 13 hornets all Proper.
